Embedded Network Engineer (Wireless & Security)

Permanent employee, Full-time · München

Role
At Hive Robotics, we are building secure, autonomous communication networks for our next generation of unmanned systems.
As an Embedded Network Engineer (Wireless & Security), you will design, implement, and optimize the network and transport layer software that enables reliable, encrypted communication in mobile ad-hoc (MANET) environments.
You’ll work at the intersection of embedded software, networking, and cybersecurity — shaping the foundation of our connected robotic platforms.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain embedded networking software for wireless, decentralized, and ad-hoc systems.
  • Design and implement network and transport layer protocols optimized for bandwidth, latency, and reliability in dynamic environments.
  • Integrate cryptographic and encryption mechanisms into embedded systems to ensure secure data transmission.
  • Collaborate with hardware and system teams to align communication software with radio and SDR hardware architectures.
  • Support system-level testing, validation, and performance analysis in simulation and field environments.
  • Participate in defining communication architectures, including routing, quality-of-service, and network resilience strategies.
  • Contribute to design documentation, system integration, and continuous improvement of communication frameworks.
Requirements
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Communications Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in wireless networking and mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) technologies.
  • Strong understanding of Network (Layer 3) and Transport (Layer 4) protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, routing, congestion control).
  • Solid background in embedded software development, ideally in C/C++ and Python.
  • Experience with cryptography, encryption, and key management for embedded or wireless communication systems.

  • Familiarity with Linux-based embedded environments, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and network stacks.
  • Ability to work independently, contribute ideas proactively, and collaborate across disciplines.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (German a plus).
  • Based in or willing to relocate to Munich.
Bonus Qualifications
  • Experience with autonomous or robotic systems (UAVs, UGVs, or maritime platforms).
  • Knowledge of secure communication frameworks (TLS, IPSec, DTLS, or custom lightweight protocols).
  • Familiarity with routing in dynamic mesh networks (e.g., OLSR, BATMAN, AODV, DSR).
  • Hands-on experience with network simulation tools (ns-3, OMNeT++, Scapy).
  • Background in cybersecurity or information assurance for embedded or tactical systems.
  • Practical interest in wireless systems, radio communication, or distributed robotics.
